I went to college in Orlando, then we moved back for two years after we had kids. I loved it equally both times. Orlando is a great city, it's so much more than just the parks.
My favorite restaurants:
Villa de Flora restaurant in the Gaylord Palms hotel. This is a seriously outstanding upscale Mediterranean buffet--each night is different (Spanish, Greek, Italian), but the food is always amazing and the ambiance and sangria are both wonderful. The Gaylord Palms is fun to explore, especially for kids. The atrium is home to koi fish ponds and little gators. The Gaylord is about 5-10 minutes from the entrance of Disney.
Sora Sushi - also at the Gaylord, Sora sushi has chic decor and fabulous ambiance. We love the Spicy Crunch and Dancing rolls.
Norman's at the Ritz Carlton Orlando - We've enjoyed a few great meals at Norman's. If the weather isn't too hot, the outside patio is just magical at night.
Cafe Tu Tu Tango off of I-Drive. I love this spot for tapas, sangria and a really fun atmosphere. Nights come alive with artists creating original art, belly dancers and sometimes even fire swallowers.
Seasons 52 - yes, this is a chain but it's outstanding. The menu is seasonal and delicious and light. I can't say enough great things about this place.
Emeril's Tchoup Chop - this restaurant is located on Universal property. The decor is gorgeous and the food is fantastic.
The Palm - located in the Hard Rock Hotel (on Universal property), The Palm is the place to go if you want a steak.
Wolfgang Puck Grand Cafe - located in downtown Disney, I always go here for the pumpkin ravioli with sage and toasted pine nuts. It's amazing. You can also order sushi or small bites in the bar area. The only drawback is that the service here is not that great, or hasn't been in our experience.
Bongo's - this is also another downtown Disney staple for us. Gloria Estefan's restaurant is an excellent choice for authentic Cuban food. The mojitos are also a must-order.
Hue Restaurant - This downtown Orlando restaurant is modern and innovative.
Margaritaville - located at Universal's Citywalk, this is our favorite spot for a casual and fun meal. Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville does not disappoint with the drink menu or cheeseburgers in paradise (or Cuban sandwiches).
Things to Do:
Swim with the dolphins at Discovery Cove.
Cross skydiving off of your Bucket List.
Central Florida has many beautiful natural springs, many are available to explore or snorkel.
You can take the scenic boat tour in Winter Park--it's beautiful and peaceful, a great way to spend an afternoon or morning.
Zip through the trees with Zipline Safaris or Zip Orlando.
Practice your waterski and jetski skills at Orlando Watersports Complex.
Check out the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
Old Town has something for everyone, from little kids to the young at heart--the slingshot ride there is kind of infamous, but I've never worked up the nerve to do it! They have frequent classic car shows and outdoor concerts too.
The Mall at Millenia - Yes, Orlando is known for its outlet malls, but if you're a serious shopper (like I am), it doesn't get much better than The Mall at Millenia. This beautiful mall has most every store you could want or ask for.
visit Lake Eola - this is a picturesque lake and park in downtown Orlando. On the weekends, it's full of musicians, artists and is usually busy with a festival of some sort. I would also highly recommend stopping by Pom Pom's Teahouse if you're in the downtown area. They're open 24 hours! Also while downtown, check out the glass blowers and other talented artisans at the CityArts Factory.
visit Winter Park - Winter Park is an upscale area outside of Orlando, it's filled with great boutiques and restaurants. Try 310 Park South (they also have a sister location on Lake Eola) and the Ravenous Pig. Leu Gardens is so serene.
see Cirque du Soleil's La Nouba in Downtown Disney - I am a self-proclaimed Cirque freak and have seen many Cirque shows. La Nouba is fantastic fun. I love this show.
If you like piano bars or Irish pubs, Pat O'Brien's at Universal Citywalk is awesome. This dueling piano bar packs them in every night. I've never had a bad time here.
